The Americans dominated the first two periods of the game. While the Swiss had their chances, too, Team USA created the more dangerous plays in front of Leonardo Genoni. The goaltender, however, managed to keep the puck out of the net.

The US also did not allow the Swiss to play their game at the beginning of the third period.  However, the team started to find its footing around the middle of the period, and the game became more balanced. With a little more than six minutes to go, the Americans had a power play opportunity, but they could not find the back of the net. As both teams did not score, the game was headed to overtime.

After 2:02 in overtime and a big chance by Denis Malgin, the US team converted one of its many chances thanks to Tage Thompson and thus won the 2025 IIHF World Championship.

The Swiss team thus takes home another silver medal. Leonardo Genoni took home a personal award: he was elected as the most valuable player of the tournament. The goaltender celebrated five shutouts in the tournament and also kept the Swiss in the game during the final.

The team will travel to Switzerland tomorrow and meet their fans at the Swiss Arena in Kloten. Doors will open at 17:00, the team will arrive at 18:30.
